During the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24), the Transport Day was organised on 06 December 2018 in the CIVITAS PROSPERITY partner city Katowice.
At the opening speech of the Transport Day, the Mayor of Katowice, Mr Marcin Krupa, ensured that the city does not only invest in measures related to decrease air pollution and GHG, but also in innovative solutions on low and zero-emission public transport. Mayor Krupa emphasised both the role of sustainable urban mobility and the role of Katowice in CIVITAS PROSPERITY.
Following this inspiring opening speech, the European Commissioner for Mobility and Transport, Ms Violeta Bulc, provided insights on how to decarbonise transport, respectively on the Commission‘s 2050 long-term strategy on transport and environment, which was adopted on 28 November 2018, ahead of the COP24.
Finally, it is worth to mention that Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans and the CIVITAS PROSPERITY project were also presented during plenary session. Head of Innovative and Sustainable Mobility Division of the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure, Ms Maria Perkuszewska, and Mr Paweł Sucheta, who represented the city of Katowice, shared details and their experience about the cooperation of the Federal Ministry and the city of Katowice to develop national guidelines and a framework for SUMPs in Polish cities and towns. This cooperation was made possible also because of the CIVITAS PROSPERITY project.
