After the City of Kassel successfully held its first workshop in the context of the EU project CIVITAS PROSPERITY in March 2018, the City of Vienna was invited in April 2018 for another workshop with the purpose of getting Kassel into shape for the effective implementation of its new SUMP. The German Institute for Urban Affairs (Difu) supports and accompanies Kassel in CIVITAS PROSPERITY with the implementation of its transport development plan by introducing best practice examples from other municipalities and customized guidance.
In this workshop, Gregor Stratil-Sauer, Deputy Head of Division Mobility Strategies of the CIVITAS PROSPERITY Champion City of Vienna and Head of the Public Transport team, together with Dr Georg Förster, Chief Officer of the Department of Road Transport and Civil Engineering Underground as well as employees from Kassel’s municipal administration developed ideas on how to communicate Kassel’s measures to promote sustainable mobility.
The success of this year’s second workshop in the context of CIVITAS PROSPERITY becomes visible in the singular ideas for the implementation of communication concepts, for the measures of the city’s transport development plan and particularly in the commitment of the different departments of the municipal administration. Dr Anja Starick represented the Environment and Green Space Department while Volker Mohr introduced the urban development’s point of view, both very important for sustainable mobility. Furthermore, the public relations department supported the workshop with its expertise.
Internal cooperation, which is crucial for SUMP processes, already works out well in the City of Kassel. Press officer Claas Michaelis gave specific advice on how a complex plan and its measures can best be communicated to the citizens. The European Mobility Week held from 16-22 September 2018 will be another important opportunity for members of the municipal administration to get together and interchange with citizens and to make mobility measures tangible. This year, the focus will be on multimodality, the regular use of different modes for different trips.
